Marion Dorn - Birds

It’s another take on an avian species for this month’s [common] thread, but birds are an ever popular choice for a motif and Marion Dorn’s are just fabulous.

The birds in Birds (screen-printed cotton, 1936) swoop this way and that for a gloriously cheery and carefree summertime pattern. It’s also one of our greeting cards – we just love it.

Marion Dorn herself was born in the US, before making a name for herself as a designer in the UK. She married Edward McKnight Kauffer – the designer behind some of London Transport’s most iconic posters – but also received her own commissions to produce designs for London Underground trains, creating the recognisable ‘Colindale’ leaf in the 1930s.

As ever, find out more in this month’s newsletter.
